Grandmother's Chai

a warm cup, made slowly, with love

☕ Makes about 2 cups

Ingredients

Steps

  1. Add the water to a small saucepan. Crush the cardamom and drop it in with the ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and pepper, then bring it all to a gentle boil.
  2. Lower the heat and let the spices simmer for 3–4 minutes, until the kitchen begins to smell like warmth itself.
  3. Stir in the black tea and let it steep at a low bubble for about 2 minutes, until the water turns a deep, glowing amber.
  4. Pour in the milk and add your sweetener. Bring it back up slowly, watching closely.
  5. When it rises toward the rim, pull it from the heat; let it settle, then bring it up once or twice more for a fuller, rounder flavor.
  6. Strain into your favorite cups and sip while it's hot. Best shared, and never rushed.

Where this chai comes from

This is a chai in the spirit of the ones a grandmother makes — a classic, family-style masala chai of the kind passed down through generations, one careful pot at a time.

It is the everyday ritual of it that stays with you: the morning clink of the pan, the spices blooming in the steam, the whole house slowly filling with the smell of cardamom and ginger while everyone waits for the first warm cup.

Made this way, chai is never really about the tea. It's about the hands that brew it and the people gathered close enough to share it.
